'Planty Cube', the world's first modular vertical farm, won the Best of Innovation Awards at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2020.
The CES Innovation Awards program, produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, honors best-in-class design and engineering in consumer technology products. Products with the highest scores in each product category will be selected separately for the Best of Innovation.
Winner of CES Best Innovation Award in the Smart City category, n.thing's Planty Cube is a modular container vertical farm with reliable environmental control technology that allows up to 13 crop cycles of high quality crops per year. The key is to be able to modularize farms according to cultivation stages such as entrance/contamination prevention, germination, working, growing, and shipping, and to flexibly connect and expand them according to the total farm size and crop demand. Hydroponic technology allows crops to be grown with eco-friendly medium and nutrients rather than soil and pesticides, and can be supplied without washing process.
The farm is operated automatically by the Cube OS, its dedicated operating system based on the cultivation data. Since all farms are managed through a network, farm servers can also be flexibly connected and expanded. Internet sensors measure the farm environment in real time and report it to the server, enabling immediate response to abnormal conditions. The remote monitoring system enables seamless communication between the head office and the farmers, making it suitable for exports around the world and attracting attention as a sustainable eco-friendly agricultural model because it never pollute or affect the environment around it.
Kim Hye-yeon, CEO of n.thing, said, “This award is particularly significant in that the global technology competitiveness of Planty Cube has been verified, and Planty Cube is positioned as an innovative 'product' that is different from the existing vertical farm facility”and added “this will speed up the export of Korean vertical farming solutions to the global market.”
